Original beekeepers from New Zealand
In the utterly original nature of New Zealand's South Island, TranzAlpine's beekeepers work in harmony with the bees and ensure that the honey is the least treated as possible. This creates a world-unique, world-class biological product of the highest quality
From Manuka shrub to Manuka honey
The South Sea myrtle, also known as Manuka (by Māori: Mānuka), is a shrub plant related to the Australian tea tree and almost exclusively in New Zealand. Manuka has been used as a medicinal plant by the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, for many generations. The effect of Manuka honey first attracted attention in the 1930s, when New Zealand dairy farmers fed their cows with and noticed that they had significantly less diseases as to cows that did not previously received Manuka honey. Since the 1980s, scientific publications have increasingly referred to the capabilities of Manuka honey. In recent years, the exceptional honey has been known in Europe through further research (including the Technical University of Dresden by Prof. Thomas Henle) and numerous media reports.
Manuka Honey is traditionally used internally and externally. In addition, manuka honey is characterized by the essential oil of the plant and a special fine-sour taste experience.
What makes this honey so special?
New Zealand Manuka Honey occupies an outstanding position in the global comparison of honeys due to its unusually high antibacterial activity. At the Institute of Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden, Prof. Thomas Henle identified the substance responsible for the antibacterial effect of Manuka honey:
Methylglyoxal (MGO).
Unlike normal honey, only New Zealand Manuka honey contains a significantly high content of this active ingredient. The higher this content, the more intense the antibacterial effect. The measured MGO concentration is given in milligrams per kilogram of honey
Comparison of MGO concentrations in honey
|
Other honeys 0 to 20 mg/kg MGO |
Manuka Honey 20 to 800 mg/kg MGO |
This MGO value also varies in Manuka honeys. According to Prof Henle, a significant antibacterial activity is given at a level of about 100 mg/kg of methylglyoxal. As is customary for natural products, the differences in MGO values in Manuka honey are based on factors such as location, weather conditions, harvest time, storage, etc.
At TranzAlpine, each batch of Bio-Manuka Honey is tested for numerous quality parameters in an independent, accredited laboratory. These studies go far beyond the scope required by law, which also analyzes the MGO’s concentration. This guarantees the MGO value indicated on each glass. A TranzAlpine Bio-Manuka honey with the indication MGO 400+ contains at least 400 mg/kg of the active ingredient methylglyoxal (MGO). Via the batch number printed on the label, all the data analysis for each individual glass can be traced accurately. The exact traceability up to the location of the bee colonies is also guaranteed in the best possible way by this quality assurance system.
Diverse use
Due to its high antibacterial activity, many naturopaths and naturalists recommend Manuka Honey for numerous internal and external applications.
If one follows the remarks of Detlef Mix, the well-known naturopath and author of the book “Manuka Honey-A Natural Product with Extraordinary Healing Power," the thumb rule follows: “The longer the honey path to the place or body being subjected to the complaints, the higher the MGO's strength should be.” You can also find more information at its website "manuka-honig.org."
For example, an MGO 100+ is often used externally in case of skin disturbances. The "all-rounder" MGO 250+, on the other hand, supports the general defenses and has proven itself for mouth, nose and throat care.
Manuka honey with high MGO concentrations such as MGO 400+ or MGO 550+ is recommended for the support of gastric, intestinal and urinary tract function or for colds.
100 Years of Beekeeping by TranzAlpine
Founded by the Newton’s family, TranzAlpine now has over 100 years of experience in beekeeping in New Zealand. Via the attachment to bees and nature, we have been working in the direction of ecological beekeeping.
For 25 years, beekeeping has been certified in accordance with internationally recognized BIOGRO guidelines for organic beekeeping, which are comparable to the specifications of well-known organic associations in Germany, such as: Naturland or Bioland. The peculiarity of this ecologically produced honey is the completely remote location of the hives.
